10 SuperSelf tips to reboot your health this spring

6 minute read

Here in the northern hemisphere, spring is definitely on its way, bringing with it new energy, new life and new opportunities. This is a great time of year to give your health a shake up, particularly if you’ve slipped into some sedentary habits or unhealthy practices over a winter spent indoors. Below you’ll find simple, actionable ideas to reboot your health this spring.

1. Go outside and get moving

The days are getting longer and the weather is getting better, so it’s time to ditch the sofa and go outdoors. Simply being outside in the daylight will help you get more vitamin D, which contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system, as well as muscle function and healthy bones and teeth. If you can get moving at the same time, so much the better – why not go for a walk with a friend, start gardening or ditch the treadmill for a loop around the park?

2. Let the light in

Spring sunshine helps banish SAD (seasonal affective disorder) and gives everyone else a mood boost. In winter, we can wind up accidentally cluttering our window sills with light-blocking knickknacks and thick curtains. Clear the clutter and let the light flow in for a free mood boost. For extra benefits, move a chair or table you use regularly near your sunniest window.

3. Nourish your immune system

Your immune system is complex, and it needs a wide range of nutrients to function effectively. As more fresh, local produce starts to come into season, this is a good time of year to think about what you’re eating – and to consider adding an immune system boost in the form of a nutritional supplement. At SuperSelf, our Immune Complex gives you a daily dose of essential vitamins and minerals, as well as traditional herbal extracts and friendly gut bacteria.

4. Make a routine healthcare appointment

OK, this isn’t very exciting, but it is essential. Use your spring energy to call your doctor, dentist or other healthcare provider and schedule your next appointment – even if it’s going to be in December. Once it’s on the calendar, you’re more likely to do it. If you’re likely to forget, ask if they can send you a reminder.

5. Quit an unhealthy habit

In winter, we tend to spend more time indoors which can be great news for certain bad habits, including smoking, drinking, overeating and being sedentary. While everyone will have their own specific goals, if you’ve been wanting to make a change, now is a great time as the world is changing with you. For example, if you want to get more exercise, it’s much easier to walk or cycle to work or go for a run at the weekend when it isn’t sleeting.

6. Eat well for your mental health

health reboot

While we often talk about mental health as though it’s completely separate from our physical health, the brain is a part of our physical body and runs on the same fuel. Deficiencies in essential nutrients, including vitamins and minerals, often have psychological effects as well as physical ones. These can be varied and may include increased tiredness, fatigue, disorientation, memory issues, brain fog and other symptoms. A varied and balanced diet is, therefore, important for both your physical and mental health – and in both cases, a high-quality multivitamin can offer peace of mind, as you know you’re getting what you need each day. We recommend our own SuperSelf Multivitamins and Minerals with Omega 3.

7. Go to bed on time

One downside to lighter evenings is that it can be tempting to stay out later – and therefore stay up later. Sleep underpins a lot of our key functions, and being tired all the time can make even the sunniest personalities dull and miserable. If you’re constantly rushed and exhausted, consider adjusting your bedtime to compensate. You may think you’re too busy to get more sleep – try it for a week or two and see if things improve. You may find that you get more done in the morning when you’re less exhausted. It's a simple yet extremely effective way to reboot your health.

8. Eat well to sleep well

Like so many other aspects of our health, tiredness and fatigue can be affected by a lack of certain key nutrients. The B vitamins and vitamins C and D all contribute to energy-yielding metabolism or the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. The SuperSelf Super B Complex capsules have at least 100% of the NRV of the B vitamins plus C and D3, giving you a great way to fight tiredness and fatigue. If you feel tired all the time or extreme levels of fatigue even after resting, speak to your doctor about the issue as routine blood tests may help you uncover a specific problem.

9. Update your health goals

In some ways, January is a terrible time to start a new project, habit or goal as – at least here in England – it’s dark, gloomy, rainy and everyone’s broke. If you made any health or lifestyle goals for this year, now is a great time to dust them off and reboot them. While going for a run every day might have seemed impossible in the January sleet and February gloom, going three times per week might be fun in the April sun.

10. Plan something fun

Health and wellness doesn’t need to be a worthy slog, like wading through badly cooked kale. If you want to meet a personal health goal, whether it’s moving more, quitting smoking or simply going to the dentist, pair it with something fun or find a fun way to do it. For example, you could schedule your dentist appointment soon after a new book is released by a favourite author, and read in the waiting room. If you want to move more, there are hundreds of fun ways to do so, from mountain climbing clubs to community gardens looking for volunteers.
